Collection of blood samples from both adult and pediatric patients using established phlebotomy procedures and techniques including venipuncture and finger sticks, as appropriate. Standard equipment will be used to obtain these samples including the use of butterfly needles, vacutainer tubes and needler holders. Responsibilities also include processing collected samples (i.e. blood, urine, etc.) by centrifuging, aliquoting and storing for subsequent analysis. Enters physician orders into Bon Secours Hampton Roads Laboratories (BSHRL) computer system, retrieves and charts computer generated laboratory results, with necessary follow-up, as required. Serves as a liaison between Bon Secours Hampton Roads Laboratories, the physician's office, and patients with any laboratory related concerns. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are required to carry out the duties of the position. Maintains excellent communication skills and displays good judgment at all times. Answers and solves problems regarding any/all specimen requirements including appropriate follow-up with BSHRL team. The Outreach Patient Services Technician (OPST) shall only engage in activities directly related to the collection/processing of specimens for BSHRL. The OPST shall not, under any circumstances, perform any nursing functions, perform/assist with any testing for the physician's office laboratory, perform any clerical functions unrelated to the processing of BSHRL specimens. Maintains all equipment necessary for the performance of each job function in the assigned location. Performs inventory and ordering of supplies, ensuring office has appropriate supplies and is adequately stocked. Must possess working knowledge of the Medical Necessity guidelines associated with Medicare and ICD-9 Diagnosis coding. Responsible for obtaining a signed Advanced Beneficiary Notice, and explanation to the patient of Medical Necessity and costs associated with Medicare not paying for tests with non-supporting diagnosis. Maintain knowledge of all insurance rules and compliance guidelines. Participates in Quality Control and other duties as assigned. This position will work in any/all physician practice and/or patient collection area as needed. May also be required to occasionally transport specimens to BSHRL.
Training in a formal Phlebotomy program, including a minimum of 60 hours of clinical experience is preferred.
Certification by a nationally recognized accrediting agency is preferred.
Phlebotomy experience required.
ICD-9 Coding class preferred. Basic PC knowledge/skills are also preferred.
Current driver's license required.
Must possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
May be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays or overtime as needs arise.
