Job Description

Southeastern Virginia Training Center is seeking an Occupational Therapist to support the facility’s mission by providing occupational therapy, evaluative and treatment/training services to a fixed caseload in order to achieve maximum functional skills in assigned individuals.

Job Description

  • Consistently conducts treatment sessions as scheduled (one to one and group therapy) and documents progress

  • Addresses physician’s orders and communicates findings

  • Assists and consults with team leaders, resource, and medical staff as needed regarding OT and motor development areas

  • Assists with initial development and ongoing update of person-centered plans

  • Evaluates newly admitted residents within 30 days of admission

  • Writes SEVTC annual, comprehensive, and 30 day evaluations

  • Performs informal assessments of positioning, splinting, and adaptive equipment needs for individuals, and takes measures to procure needed equipment/materials

  • Develops and monitors the Physical Management Plan in collaboration with the Physical Therapist

  • Demonstrates feeding techniques and use of adaptive feeding equipment to staff as needed.

  • Attends interdisciplinary team meetings as scheduled for individuals when deemed necessary and as related to sensory, positioning, self-help skills/ADLs, falls and/or motor difficulties

  • Seeks input from other team members in the program development process

  • Consults with team members as requested regarding training needs

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a program of occupational therapy accredited by the American Medical Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

  • Must be licensed to practice as an occupational therapist by the Board of Medicine Department of Health Professions Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Ability to evaluate and develop treatment/training plans for the developmentally challenged, disabled population in the areas of neuromuscular abilities, joint range of motion, communication skills, sensory skills, gross and fine motor abilities, and activities of daily living.

  • Ability to demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritize workload wisely and to manage time effectively.

  • Ability to work as a team member.

  • Ability to perform the essential physical requirements of the position which may include standing for long periods of time, walking, and lifting non-ambulatory residents.

  • Ability to work overtime as needed.

  • Ability to summarize data and write concise progress reports.

  • Ability to verbally present objective review information to the PST (Personal Support Team), the community and individuals’ family/authorized representatives.

  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

1.. Experience working with individuals that have ID/DD and or dually diagnosed preferred.
